Ladies Miss Out On Final
Derby County Ladies FC 2 Wolverhampton Wanderers Women's FC 0
Derby booked their place in the League Cup Final with a convincing 2-0 win over visiting Wolves, in a game played in conditions ranging from bright sunshine to snow storms. Wolves were disappointed with the result, especially as several members of the Swedish Wolves Supporters' Club had travelled to Derby to support them!
Derby's first goal came in the early stages of the game. They took advantage of a break away in the 18th minute and Emily Jeffrey fired her shot in from 12 yards out, giving the keeper no chance.
Wolves spurned a chance on 25 minutes, when a cross from Nicole Ledgister skidded across the goalmouth, but Amber Quick was just unable to connect with the ball. Derby could have increased their lead, but for a couple of fine saves from Wolves' keeper Becky Thomas, which got the visitors to half-time only a goal down.
Wolves started the second half brightly, putting pressure on the home side and on 67 minutes Kerrie Taylor, making her first team debut, put in a fine cross, but for the second time in the game, Amber Quick couldn't get on the end of it.
Derby started to exert some pressure, forcing an excellent clearance from Michelle Thomas and a diving save from keeper Becky Thomas, but on 83 minutes they got the breakthrough, with a second goal for Jeffrey to seal the tie. Derby will now meet Leicester City Women in the final.
Wolves Manager Dave Ball said: "I was obviously disappointed with the performance. The team didn't defend well enough, and our support play was poor when we had possession.
"In the last third it wasn't good enough, and we didn't have any clear shots on target, so that's something we've got to improve on over the next couple of weeks."
Wolves have a busy fixture schedule coming up, with six league games to fit in before the end of April:
