Narrow Defeat For Ladies
Coventry city Ladies 4 (Saulter 2, 62, 80, Lynch 75) Wolves Women 3 (Johnson 10, Ledgister 81, Clarkson pen 90)
Coventry City came out eventual winners in a hard-fought battle at Coventry University Sports Ground. The game saw some excellent play from both sides, but some controversial refereeing decisions.
Coventry got on the score-sheet after just two minutes, when a cross in from Danni Saulter was fumbled by Wolves' keeper Becky Thomas and found its way into the net.
Wolves were quick to reply, and on ten minutes a pass from Georgina Watton found striker Anne Johnson, who chipped the keeper to bring the scores level.
Wolves' keeper Thomas redeemed herself on 14 minutes when she saved from Danni Saulter at point-blank range. Just two minutes later, Wolves were on the attack, with striker Nicole Ledgister battling to win the ball and pass to Johnson, whose shot went just over the bar.
Both sides continued to have chances, with Wolves' Sarah Lambeth coming close on a couple of occasions from distance, while Ledgister and Michelle Thomas were also unlucky. Wolves' back four held firm, with Anna Perks and Thomas clearing well, and the half finished even.

The second half saw a change in the weather, as the skies darkened. Wolves were forced to make an early substitution as Lambeth suffered a hamstring injury and was replaced by Natalie Walker.
The first ten minutes of the period saw Wolves putting the home side under pressure, and they had a penalty appeal turned down as Heather Clarkson was brought down in the box.
On 62 minutes, Coventry's Danni Saulter beat the offside trap and went on to score her second, putting home side into the lead.
With the rain now settling in, both teams continued to battle, and on 75 minutes a ball which was destined to go out, hit the referee and landed in the path of Natasha Lynch who calmly strode on and slipped the ball past Wolves' keeper Thomas for Coventry's third goal.
Just five minutes later the home side made it 4-1 as Saulter bundled the ball into the net from a corner for her hat-trick.
Wolves didn't let their heads drop and made an immediate impact when the Coventry keeper slipped up while time-wasting with the ball. Striker Ledgister nipped the ball from her and calmly slotted home to make it 4-2.
Wolves continued to press, with subs Hannah Woodford and Takara Hawthorne-Smith both pushing on. They were rewarded with a penalty in the 90th minute for a foul on Hawthorne-Smith. Clarkson (pictured) stepped up and slammed the ball low into the corner of the net. Wolves battled to the end, but they left their push too late and Coventry took all three points.
Next week sees Wolves play host to local rivals West Bromwich Albion. The away fixture saw Wanderers run out 2-1 winners in a tough, incident-packed game, and the return match promises to be an entertaining fixture. The game will be played at Goodrich Sports Stadium, Stafford Road, Fordhouses, Wolverhampton, with a 2.30pm kick-off.
