Walsall 2 (Mawete 51, Dann 54)

Wolves 1 (Hughes 23)

After being a Liam Hughes goal to the good at the break, Wolves reserves slipped to a disappointing defeat at the Banks's Stadium as Walsall hit back with two goals in a four minute spell in the early stages of the second-half.

Stephen Elliott got in the first shot of the game but his 20 yard drive went straight into the arms of home keeper Bertrand Bossu.

Then an Elliott Bennett cross was deflected out to Michael Gray who curled a shot two feet over the angle from just outside the box.

Joao Batista Mawete ran onto a return pass from Troy Deeney but he was just beaten to the ball by Graham Stack. The Saddlers duo combined again a minute later with Mawete nodding a long through ball into the path of Deeney who volleyed over from 20 yards.

In then 19th minute Elliott beat his man before firing a low shot across the face of goal then Mawete forced a full length save from Stack with a low effort when play switched to the other end.

Alex Nicholls burst through the middle and stroked a shot wide of Stack's left-hand post before Wolves moved into a 23rd minute lead.

Karl Henry's pass found Hughes to the right of Walsall's area and, after cutting inside a defender, the young striker buried an angled shot past Bossu.

Rob Edwards had to be helped from the field after a late challenge by Deeney left the defender in pain on the floor. He was replaced by Denes Rosa with Gray dropping from midfield to left-back and Lee Collins joining his namesake Neill in central defence.

Two minutes before the break, Mawete held off Neill Collins' challenge and lashed a close range shot at goal that drew a tremendous reaction save from Stack.

Half-Time: Walsall 0 Wolves 1

Within two minutes of the restart David McDermott was inches away from an equaliser. He beat three defenders as he ran into the area before unleashing a shot that flew just over the bar.

But the Saddlers did draw level with 51 minutes gone when Nicholls charged down a Stack clearance. The keeper somehow managed to block McDermott's follow up shot but the ball bounced to Mawete who made no mistake from 10 yards.

Worse was to follow four minutes later when Scott Dann rose to net with a powerful header after Nicholls had pumped a free-kick into the box.

Hughes' tenacity saw him winning two challenges before feeding Mark Little who crossed for Bennett whose header was parried by Bossu.

A dipping shot from Henry was just wide of the mark and Walsall substitute Harry Harris fired wide shortly after his introduction.

In the dying minutes Bossu made two superb saves - from Eliiott and Mark Salmon - as Walsall held on to claim the points.
