Honours Even For Keepers Union
Wayne Hennessey's friendship with Kasper Schmeichel was not enough to stop him cursing the on-loan Coventry keeper for denying Wolves two extra points on Saturday.
The Dane ensured honours were shared at the Ricoh Arena with a fabulous late save from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, having earlier tipped Andy Keogh's shot on to the bar during Wolves' second-half fightback.
And Wayne, named last night in the PFA Championship Team of the Year, admitted: "When Sylvan shot in the last few seconds of the game, I was just waiting for our fans to go up behind the goal.
"I thought it was in but Kasper got a really strong hand on it. It was a great save and he played well.
"We were disappointed not to have won in the end, although they had chances as well and we made it difficult for ourselves by conceding in the first half."
The two keepers are long-time mates, having been together for a period at Manchester City.
They went their separate ways when Kasper, son of the legendary former Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel, was offered a three-year contract at City while Wayne was offered only a one-year deal.
"I was 14 or 15 at the time and was devastated," Wayne added. "I thought I would just be spending a year on the youth team bench waiting in case Kasper got injured, then I'd be off looking for another club anyway.
"I came to Wolves instead and we've stayed friends as members of the keepers' union. I shook his hand at the end on Saturday and said 'well done' - he's a good lad."
Of his PFA honour, which comes 12 months after Matt Murray was similarly recognised, the Welsh international said: "It's brilliant to be selected at the end of my first season in the Wolves team. What makes it more special is that it's recognition from my fellow professionals."
