Wolves 2 (Salmon 15, Hughes 73)

Crewe Alexandra 1 (Miller 40)

Goals from Mark Salmon and Liam Hughes saw Wolves home to victory in their friendly with Crewe at Compton Park today.

But the good news for watching boss Mick McCarthy was that two of his recovering first team players continued their comebacks without any problems.

Michael Kightly played for 68 minutes and Stephen Ward for 74 minutes of a competitive training ground friendly.

Kightly had the first chance of the game - a 20-yard angled drive that was deflected wide before Crewe keeper Owain Williams took the ball off Denes Rosa's foot as the Hungarian was about to shoot.

Wolves moved ahead in the 15th minute when Salmon swept the ball home from 15-yards after Ward's left-wing centre had been blocked.

Shaun Miller wasn't far away for the visitors with a long-range drive, and then Alex centre-forward Byron Moore broke clear and ghosted past Carl Ikeme only to over-run the ball.

Ward forced a fine save from Williams with a flying header from just inside the box after a cross from Rosa, and then Ikeme kept out a close-range header from Pape Diene.

But the keeper was beaten five minutes before the break when Miller slammed the ball home off the underside of the bar after he had run on to a long through ball from Ashley Westwood.

Half-Time: Wolves 1 Crewe 1

Kightly gave the handful of spectators watching a taste of his talents with a run down the right flank before cutting in and unleashing a shot that was just inches over the bar.

Alex Melbourne saw his 25-yard drive saved by Williams and Liam Hughes was unlucky with an on target effort that bounced clear off a defender in a crowded area.

Wolves regained the lead in the 73rd minute after substitute David Davis' volley was deflected onto the bar and over by a defender.

From Ward's corner the ball was half cleared back to the Irish midfielder and when he returned the ball back into the area French trialist Aurelien Collin knocked it back in front of goal where Hughes was waiting to convert from close range.

Ashley Hemmings, who had come on for Kightly, fired narrowly over from 25-yards and Davis was denied by the woodwork for a second time when he volleyed against the inside of the post with a tremendous effort.

Just before the end, Moore screwed a low shot across the face of Ikeme's goal and only around a foot wide of the far post.

After the game Michael Kightly said: "I feel good.

"I got 70 minutes today and my fitness felt a lot better than it did last week so I'm really happy.

"I was never going to be able to come back and start 100 miles an hour because you end up picking up other problems with calves and hamstrings.

"I've had to ease myself back in and have now come through two weeks training and two reserve games so I'm really pleased."
