Doncaster Rovers 1 (Hayter-pen 8)

Wolves 0

Wolves lost their first friendly of the pre-season with an early James Hayter penalty deciding a scrappy, ill tempered contest with Doncaster Rovers. The game wasn't helped by some inconsistent refereeing.

Rovers started strongly and both Seyi Olofinjana and Gary Breen were forced to concede early corners.

Matt Murray had to push behind a Gordon Greer header and the corner that followed, taken by Brian Stock, led to a scramble in the Wolves area and Charlie Mulgrew conceded a penalty when he pulled back Hayter.

The former Bournemouth striker took the spot kick himself and although Murray guessed correctly by diving to his left, he just failed to get his fingers to the ball.

Wolves won their first corner of the game in the 13th minute. After a surging run Olofinjana found Stephen Ward whose cross cannoned behind off a defender but Neil Sullivan punched clear Michael Kightly's flag-kick.

It took a fine save from the keeper to prevent a Wolves equaliser with 20 minutes gone. Kightly delivered an inch perfect pass to Keogh who sprinted into the right of the Rovers box and delivered a low centre that hit Gareth Roberts and was heading for the net until Sullivan deflected the ball away with his legs.

By now Wolves had started to get to grips with the game and Sullivan turned behind a low shot from Kightly at the near post before diving to save Freddy Eastwood's angled drive from the corner of the box.

Olofinjana had become a verbal target for the home supporters after he had conceded two or three fouls and after the Nigerian had been spoken to twice by the referee, Mick McCarthy and the official exchanged a few words on the touchline.

Half-Time: Rovers 1 Wolves 0

Olofinjana didn't appear after the break. He was replaced by Lee Collins who moved to right back with Karl Henry pushing forwards into midfield.

The early stages of the half saw Keogh twice making runs into the heart of the Rovers area before being dispossessed and when the Irish striker was fouled to the left of the home area, Kightly pumped the free-kick into the goalmouth where it was headed clear.

With 52 minutes gone Eastwood's through ball found Kightly but the winger's low shot lacked the power to trouble Sullivan who saved comfortably.

Midway through the half, Mulgrew was adjudged to have handled a driven cross from Dyer just outside the Wolves box but Murray claimed Woods' free-kick.

With a little less than 20 minutes remaining Daniel Jones replaced Eastwood.

James Coppinger's through ball to Dyer almost led to a second Rovers goal but Murray was quickly off his line to save with his legs.

Play swept to the other end and when Stephen Ward tried to run between two defenders he reacted furiously indicating to the referee that he had been pulled back by the shirt. But the official ignored the striker's appeals for a penalty.

In the closing stages Jones drilled a shot across the face of Sullivan's goal, and Dyer's close-range strike was ruled out for offside.
