Wolves began their pre-season warm up with a goal-less draw at Gray's Athletic.

Kick-off was put back 15-minutes owing to a serious accident on the M25 which delayed a number of away supporters many of who missed most or all of the game.

Watching from the directors box was Sir Jack Hayward and Wolves' owner-in-waiting Steve Morgan.

Two of The Blues' old boys. Michael Kightly and Freddy Eastwood, were introduced to an appreciative crowd before the start and there was also a minute's applause to mark the passing of Derek Dougan.

Wolves started strongly but the first chance fell to Grays' Dennis Oli who fired into the side netting after a cross from Abdou El Kholti.

Home keeper Daniel Knowles made a tremendous save from Gary Breen's half volley following Lewis Gobern's corner, and from another Gobern flag-kick Jody Craddock was wide with a powerful header.

Gobern connected with Mark Little's cross in the 16th minute but the winger's shot on the turn drew another fine save from Knowles. The ball ran loose to Matt Jarvis but his angled drive was cleared off the line by Andy Sambrook.

Gobern needed treatment shortly afterwards after picking up a knock and although he carried on for a few moments, he limped off to be replaced by Elliott Bennett.

Jarvis created an opening for himself with a run from the halfway line. He cut in from the left but his shot from 20-yards was too high.

Three minutes before the break Knowles once again came to the rescue of the home team when he kept out a hooked shot from Keogh after Stephen Ward's centre had only been partially cleared.

As expected, Mick McCarthy fielded a different side for the second period with just Wayne Hennessey staying on the pitch.

Within a minute of the restart Jay Bothroyd headed wide after he had laid the ball off after a good run and passed to Daniel Jones who fired over a low cross.

Ernie Cooksey shot narrowly wide although Hennessey looked to have the shot covered and when play swept to the other end, Kightly saw his low shot saved by substitute keeper Ross Flitney.

Bothroyd and Kightly combined again in the 65th minute but the former Grays player's cross-shot was deflected behind for a corner.

Then Bothroyd was unlucky when his low shot was cleared off the line by Adam Gross.

Freddy Eastwood skipped past two challenges before clipping the ball to Bothroyd whose shot was blocked at the expense of a corner.

Flitney just beat Eastwood to the ball after Kightly has lobbed a pass over the home defence before Wolves were nearly gifted a goal with just four minutes remaining.

Seyi Olofinjana's superb crossfield pass fell to Kightly whose cross was headed just inches over the Grays bar by home defender Jon Ashton.

After the game Mick McCarthy said: "I don't get too wrapped up in results pre-season. But it was a good fitness exercise for the lads to get 45 minutes each."
