West Bromwich Albion 1 (Phillips 65)
Wolves 0
(Albion win 4-2 on aggregate)
The Wembley dream is over for Wolves after a tension filled night at the Hawthorns ended with West Bromwich winning a tight contest thanks to a Kevin Phillips goal that gave Albion a 4-2 aggregate play-off semi-final victory.
Wolves fielded an unchanged starting line-up whilst West Bromwich drafted in Zoltan Gera for the injured Richard Chaplow.
Albion kicked-off attacking the Birmingham Road end and after a Jason Koumas cross went straight through the six-yard box, Jay Bothroyd forced the first corner of the game off Chris Perry but Michael Kightly's flag-kick was cleared.
Wayne Hennessey was quickly off his line to smother at Robert Koren's feet after a through ball from Gera opened up the visitors defence.
Three consecutive Wolves corners came to nothing then, on eight minutes, Andy Keogh fired high and wide after being played through by Seyi
Olofinjana.
Albion threatened when Diomansy Kamara broke free on the left and Jackie McNamara just managed to get a boot in to prevent Gera getting a clean shot at goal following the centre, allowing Hennessey to collect.
With the half approaching the midway stage Phillips headed a yard wide after a cross from Koumas.
Another Koumas run ended with the Welsh international's shot being blocked by Jody Craddock and then Kamara shot into the side netting after playing a short corner to Paul McShane and taking a return pass before running into the Wolves box.
In the 29th minute Sam Sodje went on a 20-yard run before squaring the ball to Gera who was well wide with a low shot from just outside the area.
Darren Potter was booked for a late challenge on Koumas on the Albion left. Koumas took the free-kick himself but Olofinjana cleared with a powerful header.
Just before the break Kamara was ruled to be marginally offside as he chased a Koren through pass. Had he been allowed to continue, only Hennessey stood in the striker's path.
Half-Time: Albion 0 Wolves 0
After the break Koumas fired over from 25-yards out and Craddock blocked a shot from Kamara who had run into the Wanderers area.
Koren broke clear on the right and ran in before hitting a low cross that just eluded Kamara before Mick McCarthy made a switch sending on Stephen Gleeson for Michael McIndoe.
Hennessey was forced to make a diving save from Kamara's curling shot in the 62nd minute as Albion continued to have the better of the attacking play.
Three minutes later the Baggies took the lead when Phillips headed home a Koren cross at the far post.
Seconds after the restart, Wolves were inches away from an equaliser after Sodje's attempted back pass from Gleeson's centre went past the advancing Dean Kiely. But the defender ran back and just managed to clear as the ball was about to cross the line.
Hennessey then produced a fine reflex save from Koren whose first attempt to convert Kamara's cross had been blocked by a defender.
With the visiting supporters still singing 'super Mick McCarthy' despite the disappointing scoreline, Kiely ran from his box to block at the feet of Kightly.
Charlie Mulgrew went on for McNamara and Nathan Ellington for Phillips as the game approached its final few minutes.
Bothroyd blazed over the bar after Craddock had nodded down a Kightly corner then, when Kamara played a one-two with Ellington, Hennessey saved with his legs when the striker was clean through.
Kamara was booked seconds later, after a push on Neill Collins, before both sides made changes with Sherjil MacDonald coming on for Kamara and Stephen Ward for Kightly.
Olofinjana just failed to get his toe to Gleeson's centre and then a Gleeson corner saw the ball bouncing around in the six-yard box before Kiely finally claimed.
Just before the end Cradock headed over on what was a night of agony for Wolves and their followers.
