Norwich City 0
Wolves 1 (Kightly 53)
After a backs to the wall opening half against Norwich at Carrow Road, Wolves showed tremendous strength of character to take a 53rd minute lead through Michael Kightly - a lead they held on to despite being reduced to nine men by the end of the game.
Andy Keogh made his debut and Kightly returned with Craig Davies and Rohan Ricketts making way following the home defeat by West Bromwich.
Michael McIndoe's early corner was cleared before Wolves survived a fourth minute scare after Darren Huckerby had raced clear of Mark Little's challenge. The striker was just about to run into Matt Murray's area when he went down under Jackie McNamara's tackle.
With the home crowd baying for a red card the referee opted for yellow deeming that defenders had got back to cover. Huckerby rolled the free-kick into the path of Youssef Safri whose low shot was gathered by Murray.
From another free-kick, this time from the right of the Wolves box, Safri lofted the ball into the middle where Dickson Etuhu headed wide.
In the space of just two minutes Murray pulled off four saves. First he pushed out a cross-shot from Adam Drury and then he dived to save the crisply struck 25-yard follow-up from former Wolf Carl Robinson.
Seconds later the keeper saved with his legs from Peter Throne before he somehow blocked Huckerby's piledriver from just eight-yards out.
The almost relentless pressure on the visitors goal continued and after Huckerby's driven cross had bounced off Gary Breen the ball fell to Lee Croft who, with the goal at his mercy, screwed his shot horribly wide.
It was Murray who saved the day again four minutes before the break when Huckerby again supplied the cross, this time for Etuhu who hit a shot towards the far corner only to be thwarted by the keeper's brilliant reflex save.
In the dying seconds of the half McIndoe fired a yard over the bar and Kightly didn't connect properly as he ran on to Karl Henry's through ball allowing home keeper David Marshall to save.
Half-Time: Norwich 0 Wolves 0
The Canaries replaced Jason Shackell with Andy Hughes at the start of a second-half that started brightly for Wolves.
McIndoe's free-kick drifted wide of the far post then a cross from Little was headed wide by Keogh who moments later turned and shot into the side netting after running on to Kightly's through ball.
And, in the 53rd minute it was Kightly who fired Wolves into the lead. The winger had beaten the offside trap on the right and run in to the by-line where he pulled the ball back for Henry whose shot hit the foot of the post. But the ball bounced back to Kightly who made no mistake from the edge of the six-yard box.
But the joy was soon muted as Wolves were reduced to ten men just two minutes later. Huckerby raced clear and he was felled by Breen a foot outside the area.
The defender didn't even wait for the referee to produce the red card before he trotted off. Safdri's free-kick was blocked and Jurgen Colin was wide with his follow up shot.
Mick McCarthy shored up his defence by sending on Rob Edwards for McIndoe as City went in search of an equaliser with McNamara clearing Huckerby's cross in a nick of time as Croft ran in.
With an hour gone Huckerby's pace once again put him in the clear but Edwards made a fine last ditch tackle at the expense of a corner.
In the 64th minute, it looked for all the world as if City should have been reduced to ten men themselves and that Wolves should have been awarded a penalty when Marshall kicked a clearance straight to
Keogh.
The keeper looked to trip the Irishman who only needed to tap the ball into the empty net but incredibly neither the referee or linesman indicated anything was wrong.
Darren Potter went into the book for a trip on Drury and shortly afterwards he was replaced by Stephen Ward.
Edwards made another fine block, this time cutting out Huckerby's low centre at the near post with two Norwich men lying in wait behind him.
Jay Bothroyd came on for the final few minutes in place of Keogh who had had made a more thanpromising debut working tirelessly in a lone role up front.
In the 89th minute Wanderers were reduced to nine men when McNamara was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Drury.
The five minutes of added time seemed a little over generous but McCarthy's men stuck bravely to their task with only a 22-yard drive from Colin that was no more than a foot wide causing any undue concern.
