Wolves 0
Southampton 6 (Saganowski 24, 36, 83, Breen og 27, Best 55, Surman 79)
Hopefully, it was just one of those afternoons at Molineux as Wolves suffered their worst home defeat for 39 years with Southampton rattling in six goals without a reply.
Mick McCarthy's team had bossed the early proceedings but were hit by two goals in a three minute spell midway through the first-half.
The woodwork and a penalty miss didn't help the cause in the minutes leading up to the break but, after the resumption, the visitors continued to make the most of their chances to compile an impressive, if somewhat flattering, scoreline.
Wolves were unchanged and they kicked-off attacking the South Bank end. The first corner of the game was taken by Michael Kightly. The ball was headed on to Gary Breen but his first time shot lacked power and was cleared by a defender.
In the seventh minute Seyi Olofinjana threaded a pass through to Andy Keogh but Saints keeper Bartosz Bialkowski just won the race for the ball.
Marek Saganowski took advantage of a lucky bounce to race clear but Kightly had tracked back and he cleared as the Pole was lining up his
shot.
Michael McIndoe was fouled as he ran in along the by-line by Alexander Ostlund. The winger took the free-kick himself but the ball was headed clear by a defender.
Kightly went on a run through the middle that took him past two defenders but his shot from just outside the box sailed high over the bar.
A build up involving Keogh and Olofinjana presented Kightly with another shooting opportunity but Bialkowski cut out the winger's angled shot.
Completely against the run of play Southampton hit Wolves with two goals in a three minute spell.
Saganowski headed the first in the 24th minute when he connected with Andrew Surman's right-wing centre. Matt Murray got a hand to the ball but he couldn't keep it out.
Then Rudi Skacel hammered in a low cross from the left that Breen could only prod into his own net leaving a shell-shocked Wolves side with everything to do.
Keogh was wide with a close range effort after Olofinjana had headed down a McIndoe cross before Southampton went three up in the 36th minute when the Saganowski lobbed the ball over Murray into the far corner of the net
Five minutes before the break, Keogh hit the post with a bullet header after a cross from Kightly, before Wolves were handed a lifeline in the shape of a penalty in stoppage time.
Kightly's attempted cross was handled by Chris Makin right in front of the referee who immediately pointed to the spot. Kightly took the kick himself but he failed to get enough power behind his shot and Bialkowski dived to his left to save.

Skacel blasted an early chance over following the restart after he had taken a pass from Danny Guthrie and Stephen Ward fired over at the other end after he had latched on to a Jamie Clapham centre.
But, in the 55th minute, Leon Best ended any realistic hopes of a comeback when he converted after Murray had parried his original effort.
A double switch saw Jay Bothroyd coming on for Rob Edwards and Jody Craddock for Clapham.
Moments later Kightly almost reduced the deficit when he ran onto a ball out of defence and chipped the ball over the advancing Bialkowski only to see it go narrowly wide of the far post.
Despite the hopeless situation, the home fans were at their most vociferous and a rousing rendition of 'Super Mick McCarthy' filled the
Molineux air.
Kightly shot over after he had controlled a McIndoe cross and the Craig Davies came on in place of Ward in attack.
Bialkowski made a fine save from Kightly but Saints went five up in the 79th minute through Surman who sent a left-footed volley into the net after Jermaine Wright had created the opening.
Kightly fired across the face of goal but the misery for Wolves and their supporters was complete when Saganowski latched on to a poor clearance from Murray and thumped the ball into the top right hand corner of the net to complete his hat trick seven minutes from the end.
It was Wolves worst home defeat since they lost 6-0 to Liverpool in September, 1968. The last time they conceded six at home, was also against Southampton, in October, 1976 when the Saints won 6-2. That season Wolves went on to win the Second Division Championship.
