Coventry City 2 (Adebola 26, E. Ward 70)

Wolves 1 (Kightly 45)

Despite a valiant effort, Wolves' eight game unbeaten run came to an end with a narrow defeat at Coventry's Ricoh Arena. The Molineux men were forced to play the second period with ten men after the sending-off of Jackie McNamara seconds before the break.

With Gary Breen having recovered from the dead leg he suffered against West Bromwich, Mick McCarthy was able to name an unchanged team.

Volume of traffic outside the Ricoh Arena meant that the start was put back for 15 minutes. When play did begin, Wolves kicked-off defending the end of the ground that held almost 5,000 travelling supporters.

In the third minute a Michael Doyle shot bounced off Matt Murray but the keeper quickly recovered to claim the ball.

Breen's penalty area challenge on Michael Mifsud had the home players and supporters howling for a spot kick but the referee, who was well placed, waved play on.

Michael Kightly was shown the yellow card after an off the ball incident with Doyle who then missed a great chance for the Sky Blues when he prodded the ball wide with only Murray to beat after Dele Adebola's flick into the box.

McNamara went into the book after tripping Mifsud before Andy Keogh beat the offside trap and broke clear on the right pulling the ball back to Stephen Ward who lost possession as he tried to line up a shot.

Five minutes later, City took the lead when Stephen Hughes pumped a free-kick from the centre circle into the Wolves box. The ball had bounced over Neill Collins and when McNamara tried to head it back to Murray, Adebola ran in to convert from close quarters.

City continued their assault on Murray's goal and Adebola was close again with a shot that was deflected narrowly over.

The Wolves' keeper made a great save to turn away Mifsud's shot and then Adebola hit a long range drive that just cleared the crossbar.

Stephen Ward was the victim of a marginal offside decision after he had taken the ball past Andy Marshall in the City goal and found the net, but the Sky Blues were soon back on the attack and Isaac Osbourne drilled a shot a foot wide of the post.

Rob Edwards was booked for tripping Jay Tabb on the halfway line then, in the final minute of the half, McNamara was dismissed after a stumbling challenge on Osbourne earned the defender a harsh second yellow.

In stoppage time Wolves drew level through Kightly. Keogh's cross from the right was powerfully headed goalwards by Seyi Olofinjana and although Marshall did well in palming the ball away, Kightly was waiting to shoot home from three-yards out (top picture).

Half-Time: City 1 Wolves 1

Jamie Clapham was a replacement for Kightly at the start of the second-half which was just two minutes old when Tabb squared the ball to Doyle who scooped it over the bar from the edge of the box.

Ward needed treatment after a challenge with Adam Virgo sent him flying through the air but the referee decided against awarding a free-kick.

Collins' surging run took him deep into the Coventry half before he released the ball to Keogh who sent in a low cross that found Ward in an offside position in front of goal.

Darren Potter was high and wide with a long-range effort and when play switched to the other end Clapham had to thump the ball behind as Adebola raced in on goal.

Murray superbly turned away Mifsud's drive but the keeper was beaten in the 70th minute when Hughes' corner ran through to Elliott Ward on the far side of the six-yard - the City captain sidefooting home.

Jay Bothroyd came on for Ward and after Doyle had fired into the side netting from a good position, Mark Davies replaced McIndoe.

Four minutes from time Bothroyd hit a tremendous shot that dipped and curled before just beating the angle.

Then came a worrying moment for Wolves when Murray landed awkwardly on his rightCC leg and was clearly in a lot of pain. He continued after treatment but was limping heavily.

In stoppage time, with Wolves pushing up, Mifsud found himself clean through but he lost his footing and fell over allowing Murray to claim.

With virtually the last kick of the game, Wolves were denied a point by Marshall, who spent a short period on loan at Molineux during the Premier League season of 2003/04.

Wolves were awarded a free-kick 20-yards out and when Potter tapped the ball to Bothroyd, the former Coventry man hit a low shot through the wall towards the bottom corner only for Marshall to make a fingertip save.
