Wolves 1 (Ward og 18)
Coventry City 0
An own goal from Coventry's Elliott Ward helped Wolves bank another three points and kept the Molineux side hot on the heels of the leading clubs in the Championship.
Wolves were unchanged for a game that saw the return of Colin Cameron to Molineux and pitted Gary Breen, Jay Bothroyd and Rohan Ricketts against the club they once played for - Ricketts for a spell on loan.
City kicked-off attacking the North Bank end but they were soon forced into defensive mode with Rob Edwards winning a corner off Leon McKenzie in the third minute.
Darren Potter played the flag-kick short to Ricketts and took the return before crossing for Bothroyd to lay the ball back to Jody Craddock who failed to make proper contact as he shot wide.
A teasing cross from Seyi George Olofinjana was just too far in front of Ricketts before City were forced into a change after just ten minutes with David McNamee hobbling off to be replaced by Jay Tabb.
Tabb soon made an impression shooting wide from 25-yards but it was Wolves that moved into the lead with 18 minutes gone.
A Coventry corner was cleared to Jemal Johnson who looked to pull back Chris Birchall before picking out Ricketts on the left. The midfielder's centre was collected by Olofinjana who turned and fired at goal (pictured).
Andy Marshall looked to have the shot covered but Ward stuck out a foot and diverted the ball into the corner of his own net.
Cameron was high and wide with a free-kick after Olofinjana had fouled Tabb wide on the left, then, in City's next attack, Tabb drove over the angle from 25-yards.
Ricketts shot straight at Marshall after a low cross from Johnson but it was City that enjoyed much of the possession in the final 15 minutes of the half although Matt Murray in the home goal was rarely troubled.
Half-Time: Wolves 1 Coventry 0
Just 13 seconds after the resumption Karl Henry's speculative shot from long-range drifted no more than a yard over the angle and Johnson was even closer with a drive from the edge of the box.
Jamie Clapham made a fine clearance after McKenzie had beaten the offside trap on the left and drilled a low centre into the heart of the home area.
Mick McCarthy made a double switch up front sending on Leon Clarke and Craig Davies for Bothroyd and Johnson.
Murray saved well at the feet of McKenzie to the left of the six-yard box, and then the keeper easily gathered a 25-yard free-kick from former team mate Cameron.
Clarke's header following a free-kick from Edwards wide on the right was saved by Marshall, then Davies sprinted clear of the City defence but the flight of the ball took him to the left of the City goal. He laid the ball back to Olofinjana who was wide with a first-time drive.
Marshall denied Davies who hit an angled shot after Ricketts had threaded a pass through to him.
Then Davies sprinted down the right but his cross went behind Clarke who was unmarked in the middle. Clapham picked up the loose ball and returned it into the box where Clarke saw his header saved by Marshall.
Coventry were piling on the pressure but Clarke almost doubled Wolves' lead with a stinging shot from 25-yards that was well held by the City keeper.
Clarke was booked for a challenge on Tabb and, after Murray had made a fine stop from Hughes' close range header after Kyle had nodded a McKenzie centre into the six-yard box, Kyle was yellow carded after hauling down Davies.
There was a groan from the home fans when the fourth official indicated five minutes of added time, but the Molineux defence held firm.
