boWolves crashed to their heaviest defeat of the season when they went down by 4-0 to League leaders Cardiff City at Ninian Park.

But the game was ruined as a spectacle following a dubious refereeing decision that saw Wolves reduced to ten men midway through the first-half. Up until that point it had been an even contest.

There were no changes to the Wolves starting line-up as City kicked-off attacking the end of Ninian Park that housed 1,400 travelling fans.

Within two minutes, Jemal Johnson fired a shot from the edge of the box that flew into the arms of City keeper Neil Alexander.

Jody Craddock had to head clear a centre from Joe Ledley then two Rohan Ricketts corners were cleared by the Cardiff defence.

Leon Clarke drove wide after Seyi Olofinjana had nodded the ball down to him and, as play continued to swing from end to end, Michael Chopra shot straight at Matt Murray after the striker enjoyed a kind bounce of the ball.

Ricketts jinked his way past two defenders as he ran into the City box but his low cross was cut out by a defender.

Wolves were reduced to ten men in the 23rd minute after a decision by the referee that was highly controversial to say the least. Gary Breen indicated to the linesman that he had been fouled by Steve Thompson and when the defender gestured to the official with his arms outstretched, he accidentally caught the Cardiff man in the face.

The referee, after consulting his linesman, then brandished the red card despite protests from Thompson himself.

Stephen McPhail drove narrowly wide from 20-yards as the home team looked to make the extra man advantage count and Mick McCarthy introduced Jamie Clapham for Clarke shortly afterwards in a bid to bolster the defence.

Dave Jones then made a change sending on Malvin Kamara for Kevin McNaughton and within two minutes the City man was fouled by Olofinjana - a tackle that earned the midfielder a booking.

Rob Edwards denied Paul Parry a clear shooting opportunity with a well timed tackle before Johnson found himself in the book, apparently for dissent.

Five minutes before the break Cardiff moved into the lead when Ricky Scimeca rose to head home following a corner from Parry.

In stoppage time Murray positioned himself well to get behind a well struck angled shot from Chopra.

Half-Time; Cardiff 1 Wolves 0

The second-half opened with Cardiff very much on the front foot and Chopra wasn't far wide of the near post with a low shot from just outside the area.

And the luck was certainly against Wolves as City went two up in the 50th minute. Parry crossed from the left and Charlie Mulgrew's clearing header hit Craddock in the chest and flew into the net.

The visitors then made two further changes with Craig Davies and Jay Bothroyd coming on in place of Ricketts and Johnson.

The two strikers almost conjured up a response but Bothroyd just failed to get a head to his partner's cross. Then Olofinjana won a tackle 25-yards out but the Nigerian was wide of the target with his shot.

Cardiff grabbed a third goal in the 69th minute when Kamara collected a centre from Kerrea Gilbert and shot low past Murray.

Olofinjana was close again after he won possession on the 18-yard line and hit a shot that Alexander pushed into the air before clasping hold of the ball as it dropped.

Then Edwards was just wide with a glancing header after Davies had crossed from wide on the left.

But Wolves conceded a fourth in the 79th minute when Parry hooked the ball home after a cross from Chopra. It completed a miserable afternoon for the Molineux men.
