Wolves 1 (Miller-pen 74)

Ipswich Town 0

IT Kenny Miller's 74th minute penalty gave Wolves the three points from a hard fought Molineux encounter with Ipswich Town. It was the East Anglian side's first League defeat since the end of December and the first penalty Wolves had been awarded since the one Miller scored at Crewe last March.

With skipper Paul Ince failing to recover from the hamstring injury he picked up at Burnley, Darren Anderton came in as the only change to the team that had started at Turf Moor. Joleon Lescott wore the captain's armband.

Wolves kicked-off attacking the South Bank end and they should have been ahead after just 19 seconds. Miller's shot, after he connected with Lee Naylor's cross, was blocked. The loose ball ran to the unmarked Denes Rosa who shot over the bar from just ten-yards out.

Maurice Ross cleared a dangerous driven cross from Sito Castro as Ipswich went forward for the first time before a superb pass from Miller carved open the visiting defence. Tomasz Frankowski, on the far side of the box, controlled the ball but his shot on the turn went over the bar.

Darren Currie's corner, the first of the game, was headed out by Carl Cort but the danger wasn't cleared and a fierce, low cross from Ian Westlake flew through Stefan Postma's six-yard box.

Play was swinging from end to end and after Mark Davies had stepped over a Rosa pass, Anderton charged in to thump a 30-yard shot that went ITstraight to Town keeper Shane Supple.

Westlake drove a low shot narrowly wide and then Wolves' first corner, in the 11th minute, was taken by Anderton and cleared by Fabian Wilnis.

Another corner, this time taken by Naylor, saw Anderton's shot blocked with Jody Craddock firing the rebound into the side netting.

A quickfire move saw Davies finding Frankowski who, in turn, teed up Miller. The striker tried to curl his shot into the top corner but his effort was too high.

Currie wasn't far away with a low drive, Craddock's last gasp tackle on Richard Naylor prevented the Ipswich man from having a free shot at goal, and then Postma made a fine save turning behind Scott Barron's shot after Currie and Matt Richards had set up the chance.

Dean McDonald also went close for Town with a powerful header that went over the angle following a centre from Castro.

Barron was cautioned after a late challenge on Davies and, from Anderton's free-kick, Miller's header was taken under the bar by Supple.

Ross, for a foul on Currie, and Castro for deliberate hand ball, were the next players to be shown the yellow card and then Craddock limped off with a knee injury to be replaced by Rob Edwards.

Supple made a fine save to deny Miller in the 39th minute - the keeper diving full length to fingertip away the Scot's angled drive.

The save led to three consecutive corners the second of which saw Lescott's header being deflected onto the roof of the net.

Davies went into the book for a shove on McDonald and, shortly before the break, a goalbound shot from Rosa hit Jason de Vos and bounced clear.

Half-Time: Wolves 0 Ipswich 0

A long-range shot from Westlake that posed no real problems for Postma marked the start of the new half which was less than three minutes old when former Molineux striker Adam Proudlock replaced Barron.

Westlake wasted a good a chance after he had run onto Owen Garvan's through ball and fired wide from eight-yards out.

Jamie Peters replaced McDonald for the visitors and after Proudlock had gone uncomfortably close with a shot on the turn, Jeremie Aliadiere made IThis home debut when he came on for Frankowski.

Westlake was booked for a foul on Davies and then Edwards just got his head to Currie's cross to clear with Proudlock lurking right behind him.

Miller fed Davies whose 20-yard shot bobbled wide before Lee Naylor joined the long list of bookings after an untidy challenge on Peters.

The breakthrough finally arrived after Aliadiere had sprinted into the left hand side of the Ipswich box and was upended by Castro. The referee immediately awarded a penalty and there were no arguments from the Ipswich players. Miller sent Supple the wrong way from the spot.

De Vos was wide with a header from a Jim Magilton cross and Wilnis screwed the ball over his own crossbar as he attempted to clear Lee Naylor's low centre.

Richards drove wide from 30-yards and, in the four minutes of added time, Magilton was booked for a temperamental challenge on Rohan Ricketts who had come on as a late substitute and was trying to keep possession near the corner flag.
