Coventry 2 (Scowcroft 7, Lescott og 35)
Wolves 0
Once again, the failure to convert chances cost Wolves dearly as they made an unimpressive first visit to Coventry City's Ricoh Arena.
The home side had just two on target attempts in the contest but, despite enjoying much of the possession, Wolves began the New Year with a defeat.
The visitors defended the end of the ground that was packed with their supporters. Rob Edwards returned to the side in place of Maurice Ross as the only change to the starting line-up.
Inside the first 30 seconds Gary McSheffrey tried a shot from 20-yards that went high over the bar. But, after two Darren Anderton corners had been cleared, it was City that took a seventh minute lead. Stefan Postma saved from Dele Adelola but when the ball fell to Jamie Scowcroft, he drilled a low shot into the net with the ball taking deflections off Edwards and Gabor Gyepes on its way.
Leon Clarke saw his goalbound shot bounce clear off a defender after Colin Cameron had nodded down Mark Kennedy's centre.
Then Isaac Osbourne came to the Sky Blues rescue when he got in the way of Kenny Miller's drive after the Scot had cut into the area from the right.
Wolves continued to press and another shot from Clarke was deflected into Marton Fulop's arms off former Molineux defender Adrian Williams.
Cameron's lob over Fulop went wide after Miller had carved out the opening before the keeper dealt with a low shot and, moments later, a header both from Miller.
Cameron shot over from the edge of the box after Edwards had played a Kennedy cross into his path before City moved into a two goal-lead with 35 minutes gone. And the goal was a disaster for Joleon Lescott who sliced the ball into his own net in attempting to clear Marcus Hall's nod back following a McSheffrey
corner.
Kennedy did tap the ball into the home goal three minutes later after a cross from Clarke, but the flag was already raised for offside.
Cameron went into the book after a foul on Adebola and after McSheffrey had fired narrowly wide from the edge of the area, Fulop made the save of the half when he turned away an angled drive from Miller.
Half-Time: City 2 Wolves 0
The new half opened with a wayward shot from Gyepes before Tom Huddlestone was shown the yellow card after he had pulled back McSheffrey.
Lescott wasn't far away after he had latched onto Cameron's pass following a Huddlestone free-kick but the dangerous McSheffrey fired inches over at the other end as City broke out of defence.
Seol was sent on for Jody Craddock with just over an hour of the contest gone as the visitors continued to press putting Fulop's goal under intense pressure.
The keeper just beat Edwards to a chip from Cameron and Clarke shot over after a pass from Anderton. But Wolves just couldn't turn the possession into goals.
New signing Denes Rosa made his debut when he replaced Anderton midway through the half and his fellow Hungarian Gyepes almost did the trick shortly afterwards with a cavalier run from the halfway line and a shot that drew the best out of Fulop.
Miller was booked after he had tangled with Richard Shaw as the pair chased a through ball before Lescott headed just wide from a Miller corner.
Vio Ganea was the last of manager Glenn Hoddle's substitutions when he was sent on in place of Cameron before Gyepes became the fourth Molineux player to go into the book after he had tripped Stern John.
Miller, who never gave up, fired on to the roof of the net from 20-yards, had another shot deflected just wide and then drove over the bar after running on to a short corner from Huddlestone.
In the dying seconds Ganea shot wide from near the penalty spot, and Fulop turned a long-range effort from Kennedy behind as the agony for Wanderers continued right up until the final whistle.
