Wolves 1 (Delaney og 19)

Hull City 0

Hull  Wolves stretched their unbeaten run to 21 League games, a new club record, when they beat Championship new boys Hull by 1-0 thanks to an own goal from Damien Delaney.

But the Molineux side almost paid for failing to convert their dominance into goals with Michael Oakes and the woodwork preventing a late leveller from the Humbersiders.

Skipper Paul Ince returned to the side in place of Seyi Olofinjana who was relegated to the bench and the other change saw Rob Edwards back in the starting line-up taking the place of the injured Jody Craddock.

Wolves kicked-off and but for a great save from Boaz Myhill the Molineux side would have been ahead after just 12 seconds. Edwards played the ball through to Kenny Miller whose goalbound, angled shot hit the Californian keeper's leg and went behind.

Miller was close again in the fifth minute when he drove narrowly wide of the far post after he had been played in by Rohan Ricketts.

The opening quarter of an hour was dominated by Wolves and Mark Kennedy's powerful effort was blocked by Stephen McPhee after Miller had laid the ball into the midfielder's path.

In the 19th minute the pressure paid off thanks to the persistence of Seol who beat Kevin Ellison and Roland Edge as he ran into the right side of the City box before striking a low cross-shot that hit Delaney and went into the net.

It could have two in the 25th minute when Kennedy's excellent pass dropped into Miller's path but Myhill had read the situation and just reached the ball first to boot clear.

Kennedy, frustrated by a dubious refereeing decision moments earlier, went into the book for dissent before Myhill made another 'top drawer' save to turn over Carl Cort's header from the edge of the box following a Miller cross.

Keith Andrews' return to Molineux proved to be an unhappy one - the midfielder limping off with 33 minutes gone after failing to recover from a midfield Hullchallenge. He was replaced by Stuart Green and just five minutes later there was a second switch by  City boss Peter Taylor - Stuart Elliott coming on for McPhee.

The heavy rain that had fallen since the morning meant there was plenty of surface spray but the ball was running truly.

Hull captain Ian Ashbee was booked for a late challenge on Miller before City had a goal ruled out in the 39 minutes.

Ellison pulled the ball back for Elliott whose shot appeared to be going wide before Nick Barmby ran in at the far post to stab the ball home. But City celebrations were cut short by the linesman flagging for offside.

The visitors were enjoying their best spell of the game just before the break and a deep cross from Craig Fagan was only cleared with difficulty by the Molineux defence.

In the final minute of the half, Cort's 25-yard drive spun out of Myhill's hands and just wide of the post.

Half-Time: Wolves 1 Hull 0

Only a goalline clearence from Green two minutes after the break prevented a second Wolves goal - the midfielder being in place to clear away Joleon Lescott's powerful header from Lee Naylor's corner.

Elliott headed wide from Green's right-wing cross although Oakes was in position as the ball went past the post, then Naylor thumped a powerful shot wide after he had regained possession following his partially cleared corner.

The rain had given way to blue skies by the time Glenn Hoddle made his first change of the afternoon midway through the half when Colin Cameron came on for Ricketts.

Kennedy saw his shot blocked at close quarters by Delanay and Miller's effort flew into Myhill's arms as Wolves continued to go forward.

hullBut the one goal advantage came under threat after 78 minutes when Oakes had to parry a fierce 20-yard shot from Elliott with Lescott clearing the loose ball.

Elliott went even closer seven minutes from the end when Oakes dived athletically to get his fingertips to another long distance shot to turn the ball onto the top of the bar and over.

Just before the end Leon Clarke replaced Miller who left the field to loud applause.
