Wolves 2 (Ince 2, Cameron 22)

Coventry City 2 (John 25, McSheffrey 60)

Wolves frittered away a two goal lead against Coventry after a bright start saw the Molineux men going ahead with a little over a minute gone. But, by the end of the game, the brightness had faded to near dark as a single point coupled with Preston's victory over Norwich all but extinguished any remaining play-off hopes.

Glenn Hoddle made four changes following the disappointing display at Plymouth. Daniel Jones was left out along with Mark Davies and Carl Cort who were named as substitutes. Also missing was Kenny Miller who was serving the first of a two match ban.

Into the side came the fit again Lee Naylor and Colin Cameron who had been recalled from his loan spell with Millwall. There were also returns to the starting line-up for Tomasz Frankowski and Seol.

Wolves kicked-off attacking the South Bank end and within two minutes they were ahead.

After just eight seconds Frankowski was fouled by Dennis Wise 30-yards out from the City goal and in a central position. After Robert Page had been booked for dissent, Paul Ince expertly curled the free-kick around the wall and into the corner of the net.

It was all Wolves in the opening stages and Coventry keeper Marton Fulop was forced into diving saves to cut out low centres from Jeremie Aliadiere and Mark Kennedy.

City won a 14th minute corner but the kick was cleared and Wolves were soon back on the attack and a good move involving Kennedy, Seol and Ince ended with Cameron sending a volley over the bar.

The visitors could have been level in the 19th minute when Stern John chested down a Wise cross and turned past Jody Craddock. But with the ball about to run out of play to the left of goal, and with Stefan Postma bearing down, John was only able to hook a shot across the face of goal.

With 22 minutes gone Wolves went two up with a superbly worked goal. The architect was Aliadiere who sprinted for half the length of the pitch to the edge of the City area where he backheeled the ball to Cameron who steered a low shot past Fulop.

A rousing chorus of 'One Colin Cameron' was soon echoing around the ground.

But three minutes later John pulled a goal back for the Sky Blues when he sent a powerful header past Postma following a centre from Marcus Hall.

Kennedy tested Fulop with long-range shots either side of a low effort from Maurice Doyle that was smothered by Postma.

Only the woodwork denied Kennedy a 33rd minute goal after Aliadiere had won possession inside his own half. The Frenchman sprinted towards the City goal with Kennedy to his left and Frankowski to his right.

He opted to pass to Kennedy who fired in a low angled shot that hit the inside of the far post. The rebound fell to Seol but his goalbound shot struck Fulop and was deflected into the side netting.

Cameron went into the book after a heavy challenge and a brief bout of pushing and shoving with Hall, before Stephen Hughes dragged a shot narrowly wide.

Fulop pulled off a fine save at his near post to push behind a swept shot from Kennedy following a good build up involving Ince and Naylor.

As the game entered stoppage time Ince beat two defenders as he cut into the City area and pulled the ball back to Frankowski who wasted an excellent opportunity of scoring his first Wolves goal by shooting straight at Fulop.

The end to end play continued with Kennedy floating a shot wide and a Wise free-kick presenting no problems to Postma.

Half-Time: Wolves 2 Coventry 1

The first goal attempt of the new half saw Naylor hitting a free-kick just wide after Hughes had fouled Ince outside the City box.

Just five minutes into the half Dele Adebola became the first substitute of the afternoon when he replaced James Scowcroft.

Frankowski sent a near post header over following Naylor's left-wing corner before City stunned the home support with an equaliser on the hour.

Joleon Lescott was penalised for a challenge on Hughes 22-yards out and Gary McSheffrey curled the resultant free-kick over the wall and past Postma.

Wolves then made a double switch sending on Cort for Frankowski and Davies for Seol.

The game had lost a lot of its first-half sparkle and had become a lot scrappier as conditions deteriorated in the driving rain.

Maurice Ross was booked for tripping Adebola before Coventry made a second change with Andrew Whing replacing Richard Duffy.

McSheffrey illegally halted Naylor's run through the visitors defence but when the full-back took the free-kick himself, the ball sailed over everyone and harmlessly behind.

Rohan Ricketts for Aliadiere, and Don Hutchison for McSheffrey were late changes as both sides used up their allocation of substitutes.

After the excitement of the opening 45 minutes, the second-half had been a tame affair with far fewer chances although, deep into stoppage time, Postma had to dive at the feet of John after the striker had wriggled his way through into the goalmouth.
