Preston North End 2 (Neal 41, Ormerod 71)
Wolves 0
Wolves' poor run of form continued at Deepdale where Preston North End, already assured of a place in the play-offs, eased to a 2-0 victory. It was the Molineux side's sixth game without a win.
With Paul Ince and Lee Naylor ruled out through injury, Kenny Miller having completed his two-game suspension returned and Rohan Ricketts was also named in the starting line-up.
Mark Kennedy captained the side in Ince's absence and, despite having no chance of finishing in the top six, Wolves had the backing of around 1,800 supporters.
After an early home corner came to nothing, Tomasz Frankowski had the first attempt at goal but his effort lacked the power to trouble Carlo Nash in the home goal.
In fact neither Nash nor Stephan Postma were unduly troubled in a tepid opening 25 minutes of chanceless football.
The only real moment of excitement came when Maurice Ross headed the ball behind after Simon Whaley had whipped in a dangerous cross from the right.
There was a chance for Patrick Agyemang who was given time and space to pick his spot from 25-yards but his shot finished halfway up the stand behind the goal.
The game finally sparked into life in the 32nd minute when Frankowski played a one-two with Jeremie Aliadiere in the Preston box. But the Pole was robbed as he prepared to shoot by a perfectly timed Claude Davis tackle.
Postma then had to stretch to his full length to cling on to a curling shot from Jason Jarrett.
Keith Lowe's foul on Agyemang led to a Preston free-kick three-yards outside the visitors area but Graham Alexander's drive drifted harmlessly wide of the near post.
With a double stroke of luck, Preston moved into a 42nd minute lead. Frankowski cut in from the left and was lining up a shot when he found his path
blocked by the referee.
The ball was cleared upfield to Tye Mears who fed Lewis Neal. The midfielder's low shot was well covered by Postma until it struck Joleon Lescott and deflected into the opposite corner of the net.
Shortly before the break, Postma had to knock down a fierce shot from Brett Ormerod.
Half-Time: Preston 1 Wolves 0
Eight minutes into the second-half Preston went close to a second when Ormerod headed just over at the near post following a Neal corner. The Preston striker complained that his shot had taken a deflection off a defender but the referee awarded a goalkick.
Kennedy did well in deflecting Ormerod's low centre away from Neal as Preston continued to threaten before the first substitution of the afternoon saw Carl Cort replacing Ricketts.
Lescott headed a Colin Cameron free-kick into the six-yard box where Davis cleared. Loud penalty appeals for a penalty for hands were rejected by the referee who indicated the defender had used his chest.
With 71 minutes gone Preston went two up when Postma and Rob Edwards appeared to hesitate allowing Ormerod to nip between the two and stoop to nod in Paul McKenna's cross.
Ormerod then injured himself when his momentum saw him career into the keeper. He received treatment for fully five minutes before he was carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Matty Hill.
With 79th minutes gone, only the woodwork prevented a third goal for the home side - Simon Whaley smashing a 20-yard volley against the bar after Alexander's corner had been headed out by a defender.
In the final minute of the 90, Nash made his only real save of the afternoon when he caught a header from Edwards who had connected with Aliadiere's short cross.
Then, in the seven minutes of added time, Lowe managed to do enough to put Whaley off as he shot at goal as the travelling fans made their feelings known about Wolves' performance.
