The Wolves Academy under 18s finished their season off in fine style with a 2-1 away victory over Blackburn Rovers.

The Molineux youngsters made a good start with Ashley Hemmings setting up an early chance for Kyle Bennett who fired narrowly wide.

Alex Melbourne (pictured) was just off target with a header after a Sam Winnall cross and, at the back, David Davis, Michael Wardle, Scott Malone and schoolboy debutante Jamie Reckord proved a formidable obstacle for the home attack.

Wolves deservedly took the lead five minutes before the break when Hemmings ran onto a David Ijaha through pass and held off a challenge before slotting the ball past the advancing keeper.

Although Rovers came into the game a lot more after the interval, it was no surprise when the visitors increased their lead in the 64th minute.

Bennett picked the ball up in midfield and beat a defender before hitting the back of the net with a fine 25-yard drive.

Billy Lumley made two good saves as Blackburn looked to hit back but he was eventually beaten four minutes from time after a rare piece of defensive uncertainty allowed one of the home forwards in for a consolation goal.

Coach John Perkins said: "It was an excellent footballing performance in terms of passing, movement and possession against a strong, physical and competitive Blackburn side.

"This was a really good way to round off our season."
