Wolves 2 (Hemmings 4-pen, 22)

Charlton Athletic 3 (Shelvey 11, Uchechi 24, 44-pen)

An end to end Youth Cup encounter with Charlton Athletic ended in a narrow defeat for Wolves.

The Molineux youngsters twice led through Ashley Hemmings but the visitors came storming back to go into the break a goal to the good.

Hemmings had a chance of completing his hat-trick and pulling Wolves level midway through the second-half but his spot kick was saved and, despite a valiant effort in the dying minutes, Wolves went out of the competition.

With the game just three minutes old, Wolves were awarded a penalty after Kyle Bennett was fouled by Taylor Sinfield.

The referee applied the advantage rule when the ball fell into Michael Wardle's path but when his shot was blocked the official pointed to the spot and Hemmings (pictured) sent Joe Woolley the wrong way with his kick.

But Athletic were soon back on level terms with Jonjo Shelvey converting from six-yards out after Scott Wagstaff's low cross from the right.

The visitors were looking dangerous in attack but Sinfield was forced to head over his own bar following a probing centre from Sam Winnall.

In the 22nd minute an awful backpass from Sinfield led to Wolves retaking the lead. The central defender's intended ball to the keeper was too firmly struck leaving Woolley stranded and allowing Hemmings to run in and convert from just a yard out.

It took the visitors just two minutes to draw level once again with Danny Uchechi powering a header past Billy Lumley following Rashid Yussuff's right-wing free-kick.

Three consecutive Charlton corners caused problems for the home defence before the danger was eventually cleared, and Kyle Bennett fired wide of the near post with a shot from a tight angle.

Shortly before the break all eyes were on the referee as Uchechi went down in the box under a challenge from Peter Williams but the official, who was right up with play, waved away the appeals.

Wardle then hit a short cross that Winnall got a toe to. But the ball struck a defender and ballooned up in the air allowing Woolley to collect.

Charlton took the lead for the first time on the night in the 44th minute when Jon Dunleavy tripped Yussuff and Uchechi converted from the spot.

Seconds later Wagstaff was inches away from a fourth when his shot flew across the face of goal and just wide of the far post.

Bennett got in the first effort of the new half when he forced Woolley to turn the ball behind at the near post.

On the hour mark Winnall played a short corner to Bennett who delivered a low cross that Wardle backheeled towards goal only for Charlton substitute Sam Long to clear off the line.

Wolves were awarded a second penalty with 65 minutes gone when Winnall was upended by Woolley.

Hemmings stepped up to the spot but his kick lacked power and Woolley dived right to hold the ball at the second attempt.

Wagstaff went into the book for a late challenge on Bennett and after Winnall's well struck drive had been claimed by Woolley, Alex Melbourne was yellow carded after fouling Wagstaff.

Williams headed into the arms of Woolley after Bennett floated a free-kick into the Charlton box and, after some heavy pressure from Wolves, Woolley made a fine save to turn away Winnall's drive in the dying seconds of the game.
