Another Win For Youngsters
WOLVES 2 NEWCASTLE UNITED 1
Goals from Kyle Bennett and David Ijaha helped the Wolves Academy under 18s to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle at Compton on Saturday.
The result made it two wins out of two for the youngsters following their victory at Leeds seven days earlier.
"The first-half was a fairly even contest with both sides having chances," said coach John Perkins.
"For us, Ashley Hemmings and James Davis both had good efforts well saved by the Newcastle keeper, whilst Billy Lumley in our goal also made a couple of good stops.
"Newcastle's cause wasn't helped shortly after the break when one of their forwards was sent-off for using foul and abusive language.
"We took advantage of having the extra man by forcing United back and we took the lead in the 54th minute through Kyle Bennett, who beat a defender before scoring with an angled shot into the far corner from eight-yards out.
"Ten minutes later some good play on the edge of the box from Alex Melbourne led to our second. Alex held the ball up well before laying it off for David Ijaha who smashed a shot into the top corner from just outside the area.
"James Davis and David Davis both went close to putting us further ahead but Newcastle pulled one back with nine minutes left when a quickly taken free-kick caused problems in our box and the ball was scrambled into the net after we had failed to clear it.
"Having said that, I thought our back four had played really well - as they have been doing all season. And, in my view, we just about edged the 90 minutes as a whole."
