The Graduates
A total of 30 graduates of the Wolves Academy have appeared in the first team. Some have gone on to play for the country's top clubs such as Robbie Keane, a regular in the Republic of Ireland side, who now plies his trade with Tottenham Hotspur. Also Joleon Lescott, who is close to full international recognition after impressing with Everton, and Lee Naylor who, after nine years at Molineux, has scooped the honours north of the border with Glasgow giants Celtic.
Keane scored 29 goals from 88 appearances for Wolves before he moved to Coventry City for a £6 million fee to become the biggest transfer from Molineux and a British record for a teenage player, in August 1999. After leaving Highfield Road he joined Inter Milan for a short spell before returning to England with Leeds United. Then, in August 2002, came the £7 million transfer to Spurs. He has now won over 70 caps for his country and his 30 plus goals makes him the Republic's top scorer at senior level.
Some six years after making his first team debut for Wanderers, Lescott moved to Goodison Park in a deal worth up to £5 million in the summer of 2006. In all, he made over 230 appearances for Wolves and scored 13 goals. Having established himself with the Toffees, Joleon won his first England cap, against Estonia, in October 2007.
Bloxwich-born Naylor broke through into the Molineux first team as a 17-year-old in October, 1997. In the years that followed he made over 330 appearances in defence for the club and won caps for England up to under 21 level. After moving to Celtic shortly after the start of the 2006/07 season, he went on to win Scottish Premier League Championship and Scottish Cup medals He was also nominated for the season's SPFA Player of the Year award.
Carl Robinson has won over 30 caps playing for Wales. The midfielder made his debut at Molineux during the1996/97 season after he had spent a brief spell on loan with Shrewsbury Town. He played over 180 games for Wolves in six seasons before a move to Portsmouth in 2002. Loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Walsall, Rotherham, Sheffield United and Sunderland followed before he joined the Black Cats on a full contract. He then moved to Norwich, again after an initial loan, before moving to Canada to play for Toronto Lynx.
One player who did not feature for Wolves' senior side, but went on to enjoy top flight success at Watford is Gavin Mahon. The midfielder left Molineux to play at Hereford and Bradford before moving to Vicarage Road.
The first graduate of recent times to make the grade was Shaun Bradbury who made three appearances in the 1992/03 season. But the first to make a real impact was fullback Jamie Smith, who won his debut in 1994 under Graham Taylor and went on to play almost 100 games for Wolves before moving to the Premier League with Crystal Palace.
